Evaluation 1 - O2 YCN competition brief

1. What skills have you developed through this project and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I feel more confident working collaboratively have enjoyed the experience of negotiating and making decisions with a partner. Me and Jonathan had similar ideas from the out set of the project which helped us make quick decisions and get out of the brief what we wanted to achieve. Working collaboratively is a skill I wanted to improve because in the past it hasn’t always gone so well. This time I am pleased to have been part of making this project work.

I improved my photography skills; we booked out the lighting studio and had an induction to all the equipment. This allowed us to have more professional looking photos to take into our final poster and leaflet designs.

I also applied the typographic skills from the type module to the leaflet design, transferring skills I had previously learnt made the process of creating a more professional product less time consuming and enjoyable.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?

From the start of the project after reading the brief me and Jonathan was excited to delve into finding a “big idea” we brainstormed things we could relate to “we’re better, connected” and also took into account our personal design interests. We are both very interested in print based design and paper so we generated work along these paths.

The connection of O2’s strap line and origami was perfect for us to get our teeth into something exciting for this brief. However a problem developed when linking the posters to the leaflets, and what incentive the audience had for creating their own origami shapes from the leaflets. This was brought up in crits which was very helpful because we were able to step back and analyse how successful our project was so far. We had to go back and re-think the designs until the poster related well to the leaflets. Although time consuming this made our idea work more successfully and received a better reception at crits.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I think the imagery we used was very strong and taking photos in a proper lighting studio really made the difference. I think the type and layout of the posters and leaflets has been greatly improved from my previous projects. For the future I will continue to work on my type and layout skills so I can produce designs that communicate successfully. I think Jonathan and me have produced pieces of work in this brief I would be very happy to put in my portfolio so I consider that a strength.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?

Although I feel our concept was strong the final media used to produce the idea, as print based graphics wasn’t as strong as we first anticipated. If our idea went along-side a moving image piece it could portray our idea more strongly showing a greater link of origami and the relation to “we’re better, connected” This could have been shown by perhaps a video of us making the big origami ball and how it was created from individual pieces connected together.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1. Work collaboratively with more people so our idea can stretch to moving image work.
2. Spend more time developing the concept so we can utilise the other ideas we had for the posters.
3. Develop more test pieces and mock-ups of printed designs to make sure we have the best ones.
4. Draw up a timetable from the beginning to make sure I use my time in the most efficient way.
5. Discuss our ideas more outside of crits to make sure we are still producing designs that work and not getting carried away by ourselves.
